Nicknamed both "The Private
Isle" and "The Pineapple Island", the island of Lanai lives
up to both these names. Lanai is home to only about 5,000
residents and was once the largest pineapple plantation in
the world. In fact, producing pineapples was the main
industry for the island in the past when in 1922 the Dole
Food Company, previously known as the Hawaiian Pineapple
Company, bought the entire island to create the world's
largest pineapple plantation. Today, the pineapple industry
is pretty much phased out on the island and has been
overtaken by the island's main industry of tourism.
Most of the
island's residents live in Lanai City, the only town in
Lanai, leaving the rest of the island pretty much
uninhabited. Tourists vacationing on the island can expect a
very private and secluded vacation with not much of a
nightlife. Lanai does offer visitors many outdoor activities
like hiking, sightseeing historic attractions, snorkeling,
and swimming just to name a few of these activities. There
are a number of tour companies that can take you to various
attractions or on some outdoor activities to keep you busy.
If you plan on visiting the various attractions on Kauai on
your own be aware that most of them can only be accessed
through dirt roads so it might be best to rent a 4-wheel
drive vehicle.
The island of
Kauai is home to two world-class five-star luxury resorts,
Manele Bay Resort and the Lodge at Ko'ele, both of which
offer almost every practical service or amenity a vacationer
can think of. Other than these two resort there is one other
smaller hotel located on the island called Hotel Lanai with
only 11 guestrooms available. So if your looking for a
luxury vacation on a beautiful tropical island, Lanai just
might be your Hawaiian Island of choice!
